Can Designers Go "BIG"?
3:02 PMI am a size 12 and don't consider myself a "big" however to the fashion world a size 12 is way off the chart. According to the censuses a size 12 is the average woman size here is America. However for the average high fashion deisgner I believe a person my size is more challenging then a 5'9 size 0 model or actress. Case in point Jennifer Hudson Oscar De La Renta gown she wore for the Oscars. Lets face it the dress was nothing spectular and that shiny bolero wasn't helping but that's a whole new post. Anyway Oscar De La Renta Fall 2007 Collection runway show was great with different textures, slim and loose silhouettes and his divinely designed evening gowns. Jennifer Hudson dress was a gorgeous color and the pockets was nice touch of surprise. The fit and flattering of the dress is what I was not to pleased with. I felt like the dress was made as a last minute decision with some simple fabric and the common design for a "big" woman which is gathering at the bust and long draping from the waist. Like a said before nothing specutalar, the amount of great dresses Oscar De La Renta have designed in his years I would have thought it would have something special about it with an idea that was out of the box for this soon-to-be Oscar Winner.
The dress I thought was flattering and the fit was exquiste was Queen Latifah dress designed by the one and only Carmen Marc Volvo. He really knows how to design and make a dress fit for Queen Latifah; I believe she is a size 14-16 whatever her size she looked wonderful.
The dress complimented her figure (it gave her a good shape), the repeated horizontal seams and the flare out at the bottom. Carmen Marc Volvo always designed a dress for Queen with detailing and a little of bit a flare. I believe being an average size woman in America it great to see a high fashion designer that can cut dress for a size 0 and for a size 12. However it's extremely disappointing that some designers don't put the same effort in making a dress for someone who is size 12-16 as to someone that is a size 0-2.
